New York University Requirements

Step 1: Completing the common application

                            The common application is a requirement when applying to NYU, and you will need the following in order to complete it: 

1) A personal email address

2) Contact information for either your counselor or a school representative who will be the one completing the Common Application School Report where they will need to submit the transcript with your high school grades + a recommendation letter which is optional.

3) Contact information for the person who will submit your letter of recommendation. When applying to NYU, you will need a letter from recommendation from a teacher, coach, counselor, etc. However, they also have the option to email it to admissions.docs@nyu.edu if they experience difficulty submitting it through the Common Application. 

4) $80.00 application fee – it isn’t refundable, yet you an request a fee waiver if it would be difficult to pay the fee 

Step 2: Submitting the necessary documents

1) Standardized testing – you can see the  standardized testing requirements page for detailed explanation on what NYU accepts. The most popular exams(listed below) are accepted, yet you also have other options depending on your preference. 

  • SAT or ACT 
  • 3 AP exams – one Humanities exam, one Math or Science exam, and one exam of your choice (you can see information about what AP exams are on the page for MIT on the website) 

2) Self Reported Academic Record (SRAR) – you have the option to complete this after you are done with your application 

3) An audition or portfolio for the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development and Tisch School of the Arts – if you want to apply to these programs, testing is optional and you can instead submit the required audition or portfolio:

4) If English isn’t your native language and you have not completed 3 years of study where English is the main language of instruction by the time you are applying to NYU, you should submit an English language testing score for an exam you have taken no more than two years before the submission of your application. You have the option to take the following exams:
  • TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test) – results from both the in-person version and the iBT Home Edition are acceptable. It is good to aim for 100 or above on the exam. 
  • Duolingo English Test – aim for 130 or more on the exam
  • IELTS Academic (International English Language Testing System) – aim for 7.5 or more on the exam
  • PTE Academic (Pearsons Test of English Academic) – aim for 70 or more on the exam 
  • C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency (Cambridge English: Advanced or Proficiency) – aim for 191 or more on the exam
  • iTEP (International Test of English Proficiency – Academic-Plus) – results from both the in-person and online version are acceptable, and it is good to aim for 4.5 or above . 
5) Submit also records of college work for which you have academic credit
 
6) Lastly, you should also submit the Common Application Mid Year Report if your mid-year grades are available. Your first semester grades for you senior year should be included.

Financial Aid

NYU is offers scholarships to non-U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents who apply as first-year students. Students qualify for need-based assistance, and this is based on the information they present in their CSS Profile, which must be submitted by the deadline in order for the student to be considered for scholarships.
